What is Gastrointestinal Bleeding (GI bleed)
Gastrointestinal Bleeding (GI bleed) is not a disease but a symptom of a disorder in your digestive tract. The bleeding can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the rectum. The bleeding can be so mild that only a lab test can detect it or so severe that it can be life-threatening.
Some of the signs and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Bleeding are:
- Red or dark brown vomiting blood
- Black, tarry stool
- Blood in stool
- Lightheadedness
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain

Causes of Gastrointestinal Bleeding are:
GI bleeding can happen either in the upper gastrointestinal tract or in the lower gastrointestinal tract. When bleeding occurs in your esophagus, stomach, or initial part of the small intestine (duodenum), it is considered as upper GI bleeding. Bleeding that occurs in the lower small intestine, large intestine, rectum, or anus is considered as lower GI bleeding.
