    December 5, 2018

Advanced Integrated Comprehensive Liver Care Network would benefit patients from Madurai, Karaikudi, Tiruchi and Karur for treating liver diseases.

Ms. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals said, Apollo Hospitals Madurai Division has launched the Advanced Integrated Comprehensive Liver Care Network. Liver disease spans the entire spectrum of diseases, starting with congenital diseases which can cause liver problems in young children and also diseases occurring due to our lifestyle. Liver cancers can be primary cancers of the liver or they can be metastatic cancers whichever from other side. Hence a need to provide a centre which can take care of the entire range of liver diseases.

At present, in Madurai Division we have five hospitals – two hospitals in Madurai, one in Trichy, one in Karaikudi & one in Karur. Linking these five hospitals together, a Comprehensive Advanced Liver Care is being provided, enabling us to further treat any form of liver disease, from simple jaundice to an early stage of liver disease, requiring liver transplant.

The entire spectrum, involves various specialists to different treat liver diseases like Medical Gastroenterologist, Surgical Gastroenterologist, Intensivist (for ICU care), Interventional Radiologists, Hepatologists, Liver Transplant Physicians and Liver Transplant Surgeons; to meet the highest healthcare standards.

In her address, Chief Operating Officer of Apollo Hospitals, Madurai, Dr. Rohini Sridhar said that with different lifestyles and varied food habits, special care has to be taken in the event of falling sick. Symptoms, if neglected, may lead to complications and only comprehensive healthcare may give relief as otherwise, patients, if young, may turn non-productive at an early age.

Thus, liver related diseases, if checked properly, could be treated even in an Out-Patient setting but if ignored, it may end up in hepatic coma, the patient would remain in ICU. Dr. Rohini further added that with technology on one hand and with renowned doctors on the other, Apollo Hospitals would set a very high benchmark.

Offering felicitation, Dr. Anand Ramamurthy, Senior Consultant – Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation, Apollo Institute of Liver Sciences, Chennai, traced the first liver transplant surgery performed in Apollo Hospitals way back in March 2008 and spoke on how the State government brought in regulations on the role of donors in liver transplant. He also outlined about the features of the hub and spokes model adopted by the hospital. The network started in Madurai should benefit the needy from southern parts of Tamil Nadu and the objective was to minimise the travel time, he noted.
