Dr. G. Sengotuvelu, Senior interventional cardiologist successfully performed the first TAVR – Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement at Apollo hospital, Chennai on 28 November on a patient who had severe aortic valve stenosis. The patient also had multiple co-morbid conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, post CABG status, Chronic Kidney Disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder with severe Pulmonary Hypertension. The patient did well and got discharged after 5 days. This is the first such procedure in the Apollo group and we become one of the very few centres performing TAVR in the country.
Speaking on the surgery, Dr. Sengotuvelu. says “This highly symptomatic patient who was hardly able to walk even a few steps greatly benefitted from TAVR – and is now able to perform all normal activities”
“I am sure that many patients with aortic stenosis who are not fit for a major aortic valve surgery can benefit from this procedure” said Dr. N.Sathyabhama, Medical Director, Southern region.
