Apollo Hospitals, Chennai has introduced a new technique to treat bradyarrhythmias: the HIS-bundle-pacing procedure
    March 20, 2020

Apollo Hospitals, Chennai has introduced a new technique called the HIS-bundle-pacing procedure. Dr. A. M. Karthigesan, Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai has used this new technique to treat patients with bradyarrhythmias. Traditional Pacemaker restores normal heartbeats in millions of people, but the widely using technique is placing the ventricular lead at the lower Right Ventricle which increases risk of atrial fibrillation, heart failure and mortality.

A newer procedure called HIS Bundle pacing is an alternative approach to RV Pacing. This new Pacing technique i.e. HIS Bundle pacing, engages the normal electrical conduction system of the heart, thereby prevents worsening of cardiac function and is considered more physiological way of pacing the heart.

HIS bundle is an attractive site for physiological pacing but actual lead placement can be technically challenging due to its anatomic location and surrounding cardiac structures.

HIS Bundle pacing offers an elegant solution to potential pacing induced deterioration in cardiac function. Since activation occurs via the normal conduction system, it does not result in abnormal ventricular contraction.

Dr. A. M. Karthigesan, Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist said that HIS Bundle Pacing offers a superior ventricular synchronous pacing strategy and better long term outcomes with respect to cardiac function and improvement in quality of life when compared with traditional RV pacing.

Being a pioneer in adapting newer technology, Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai also organized a workshop to train doctors. An exclusive symposium on Physiological Pacing was also organized to create awareness among the physicians about this newer technique.
