    August 29, 2018

A one-day workshop for the doctor fraternity on “Detection and Management of Child Abuse” was organised at Apollo Children’s Hospitals, Chennai. The workshop was inaugurated by Ms. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group.

The joint conference was organised by Apollo Children’s Hospitals and TULIR (NGO), a forum for presentations and discussions about multi-disciplinary efforts to investigate, treat and eradicate clinical issues during detection and treatment of child abuse.

Child abuse is a serious social issue with high morbidity and mental stress. Across the world, every year approximately 155,000 death occurs in children due to abuse or neglect. Though it is difficult to prevent recurrent child abuse or recognising early abuse but it is an essential factor for limiting the long-term effects. The emergency department is highly utilized by the victims of child abuse than the general paediatric population, but in spite of this, child abuse remains unrecognised.

It is important to implement a uniform screening protocol for child abuse in the emergency department, which will further enable early and increased rate of detection of child abuse thus reducing both its short-term and long-term effects.

Dr. Jagadeesh Narayan Reddy, Professor – Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bangalore and Ms. Vidya Reddy, TULIR addressed the seminar where the Government policies and legal implications of CSA were explained to the medical fraternity.
