In a major feat of clinical excellence, at Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Nellore, Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Madan Mohan Reddy and his team of doctors have successfully performed 23 knee replacement surgeries in a matter of 13 hours, on the 7th of August 2021. The clinical team included Orthopedic Surgeons Dr. C. Vivekananda Reddy, Dr. Sashidhar Reddy, Dr. Rakesh B Shetty, Dr. Karthik P Reddy, Anaesthetists and Pain Specialists Dr. Srinivasan S. M. and Dr. Vamsidhar Reddy G. The team was ably assisted by 7 highly trained nurses, in three different operation theatres. The entire day’s schedule was optimally planned and organised by Dr. Shaik Abdul Sahul Hameed of Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Nellore.
The first surgery started at 5:00 AM in the Saturday morning and the last one was successfully completed at 6:00 PM before sunset. Although most of the surgeries were straightforward in clinical sense, 3 of the 16 patients had other complications, like the 82-year-old patient from Ongole who apart from his advanced age had arthritis and knock-knee. However, all the patients made a swift recovery and were discharged over the weekend. Dr. Madan Mohan Reddy, who brought his expertise to the operation table, noted “this kind of feat is possible only at Apollo because of the stringent SOPs, world class infrastructure, and the highly skilled clinicians. Without them this would have been a statistic for a month.”

The recent phenomenon of minimally invasive knee replacement surgeries has been a major boon for patients in terms of short hospital stay, faster recovery, minimal blood loss, very small scar and quicker return to normal life.
