Introduction

Ablation is a localized procedure by which a tumor is primarily treated causing cell destruction and tumor shrinkage.

Radio frequency (RF) ablation is a new & advanced technique of thermal ablation (using heat) to treat cancer. It is a non-surgical procedure and a percutaneous method of treating cancer using specialized needles.

There are also other forms of Tumor ablation by using microwave energy (Microwave Ablation), extreme cold (Cryo-Ablation), chemicals (Alcohol Ablation method – Percutaneous Ethanol Injection-PEI) and Irreversible Electroporation (uses high voltage to open cell pores and cause cell death by ablation)

RF Ablation is done by introducing single needle electrodes into the tumour, generating ionic currents in the tissue which causes an increase in the local temperature.
