Procedure

PIPAC is a minimally invasive procedure done under general anesthesia through Laparoscopic approach. Using the video camera, the extent of the peritoneal disease is documented and the specialized device CapnoPen is inserted to the abdomen through a trocar.

The liquid chemotherapy drug is converted to spray form (aerosols) by the injector and CapnoPen and this Aerosolized chemotherapy is sprayed into the abdomen. Chemotherapy being in the vapor form can be uniformly distributed into the abdominal cavity and can penetrate the tumor tissues deeply. This translates into better tumor killing by the chemotherapeutic agent. The procedure usually takes 60-120 minutes and might require one or two days of hospital stay.

PIPAC treatment is usually done in addition to systemic therapy and PIPAC can be repeated every 4-6 weeks for up to 8 sessions based on the individual case. Alternate sessions of PIPAC and systemic chemotherapy can also be done.
