Sickle Cell Anaemia Signs and Symptoms

  • Anaemia
  • Episodes of pain / Unexplained episodes of severe pain – such as bone pain, pain in the abdomen, chronic pain, which can result from bone and joint damage, ulcers, and so on
  • Hands and feet swelling, known as dactylitis.
  • Frequent infections that damage the spleen
  • Delayed growth in infants & children and delayed puberty in teenagers
  • Vision problems
  • Fever
  • Chest pain or chest discomfort
  • Abdomen swelling
  • Pale skin or nail beds

  • Yellow tint to the skin – known as jaundice, or whites of the eyes – known as icterus

  • Signs of stroke – Includes seizures, weakness or numbness of arms/legs/both, sudden speech difficulties, and loss of consciousness. Give special attention in case children with any one of the symptoms.

  • Acute chest syndrome – Chest pain, fever, and breathing difficulty due to lung infection or blocking blood vessels
  • Hypertension signs – Shortness of breath and fatigue (Usually affects adults)
  • Organ Damage – The lack of oxygen-rich blood can damage nerves and organs, including kidneys, liver, and spleen
  • Blindness
  • Leg ulcers – namely open sores on legs
  • Gallstones due to high level of bilirubin
  • Priapism – In terms of men, this disorder can have painful, long-lasting erections, which can lead to impotence over time
  • Pregnancy Complications – the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and having low birth weight babies due to high blood pressure/blood clots
  • Painful crises, Aplastic crises, Iron overload, and Sickle nephropathy
