Sickle Cell Anaemia Risk Factors

  • Can be diagnosed in children and young adults.
  • Sickle cell disease is genetic – to have it, children must get 2 faulty genes – one from each parent. Namely, the condition of an autosomal recessive pattern, which means both copies of the gene in each cell have mutations.
  • More common in those with ancestors from people of Africa, India, and Mediterranean
  • Develop symptoms when the body is exposed to some stress condition like fever, dehydration(loss of water), being at high altitudes, pregnancy, acute blood loss(e.g., GI bleeding)
