Paediatric Brain Tumour Risk Factors

Brain tumours in children usually have no known risk factors. However, some of the following may be associated with childhood brain tumours:

  • Certain inherited syndromes such as

    • Neurofibromatosis

    • von Hippel-Lindau disease

    • Li-Fraumeni syndrome

    • Tuberous sclerosis

  • Family history of brain tumours
  • Radiation exposure –This exposure comes from radiation therapy used to treat another type of cancer, like leukaemia, during childhood.
  • A weakened immune system, such as in children born with AIDS
