Paediatrics Acute Myeloid Leukemia Overview

Leukaemia is a common cancer in children and teens. Acute Myeloid leukemia (AML) is children’s second most common leukaemia.

“Acute” means that leukemia usually worsens quickly if it is not treated.

In AML, the bone marrow makes abnormal myeloblasts (a type of white blood cell). When the abnormal cells crowd out the healthy cells, it can lead to infection, anaemia, and easy bleeding. The abnormal cells can also spread outside the blood to other body parts.

There are different subtypes of AML. The subtypes are based on how developed the cancer cells are when diagnosed and how different they are from normal cells.
