There are no known risk factors; however the following factors may be associated with it
- History of previous treatment for any type(s) leukaemia

Genetic risk factors
- Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21)
- Li-Fraumeni syndrome
- Neurofibromatosis
- Fanconi anaemia

Inherited immune disorders such as
- Bloom syndrome

Klinefelter’s syndrome
- Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome
- Environmental factors such as Ionizing radiation and certain toxic chemicals may predispose to the development of leukaemia
