Paediatrics Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Overview

Leukemia is a common cancer in children and teens. Acute Myeloid leukemia (AML) and Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are the two types of leukemia of which ALL is the most common in children.

Risk Factors

There are no known risk factors; however, the following factors may be associated with it

  • History of previous treatment for any type(s) leukaemia

  • Genetic risk factors

Signs and Symptoms

  • Anaemia
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Coughing and Shortness of breath

Diagnosis

  • Bone marrow aspiration and bone marrow biopsy – The doctor uses a needle to take a sample of marrow and blood from the hip bone.

Treatment

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses cytotoxic drugs to kill cancer cells. These may be given either through an IV or as an oral tablet. In general, treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)..
