Overview
The Ileum is the last part of the small intestine. and it connects to the cecum (the first part of the large intestine).
Risk Factors
- Sex- Men are at a higher risk
- Age- More common in people over the age of 60
- Smoking increases the risk of Ileal cancer
- Alcohol consumption increases the risk of Ileal cancer
Signs and Symptoms
- Abdominal pain and cramps
- Loss of appetite
- Feeling of fullness
- Constipation
- Inability to pass gas
- Nausea and Vomiting
Diagnosis
- Clinical Examination – If the clinical symptoms are suggestive of Ileal cancer, the physician orders certain investigations to confirm the diagnosis and identify the degree of spread of the tumor.
Treatment
Most of the Ileal tumors except Lymphoma are treated by surgical resection of the tumor. Surgery is the curative option for Ileal adenocarcinoma, GIST and neuroendocrine tumors.
