Overview
Hypopharyngeal cancer is a rare type of throat cancer. It affects the bottom part of the throat, called the hypopharynx. It is situated behind the voice box.

Unfortunately, hypopharyngeal tumors produce few symptoms until they are advanced such as
- Sore throat
- Ear pain
- Hoarse voice
Diagnosis
- Fibreoptic hypopharyngoscopy – The doctor examines the hypopharynx with the help of small mirrors or fibre optic endoscope by passing the thin endoscope through the nose into the pharynx. This is done under local anesthesia.
Treatment
The three main types of treatment for these cancers are surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Most of these cancers will need surgery and /or radiotherapy.
