Anal Cancer
Overview
Anal cancer is the term for abnormal growth of cells in the anal canal. It is an uncommon type of cancer in the gastrointestinal tract. The anus is connected to the rectum by the anal canal. The anal canal is a short tube at the end of the rectum through which stool leaves the body.
Signs and Symptoms
- Bleeding from the anus or rectum.
- A swelling or ulceration near the anus.
- Pain in the area around the anus.
- Itching or discharge from the anus.
- A change in bowel habits.
Diagnosis
- Physical Examination – The physician visually examines the anal canal and does a digital rectal examination and anoscopy.
Treatment
- There are many ways to treat anal cancer depending on the stage, location and type of cancer. The most common cancer i.e. Squamous cell carcinoma of anal canal is treated with chemoradiation therapy.
