    Foam Sclerotherapy For Spider Veins
Institutes of Vascular Surgery - Apollo Hospital

Foam sclerotherapy is a common treatment used after EVLA to address any residual spider veins. This minimally invasive procedure not only treats the visible signs of spider veins but also targets the underlying causes. In some cases, foam sclerotherapy may be the primary therapy needed to manage underlying vein issues. The procedure involves injecting a medication into a foam mixture that is then applied directly to the varicose veins after being diluted with air. The foam displaces blood in the veins, allowing the medication to effectively kill the cells lining the vein. Over time, the body naturally breaks down and absorbs the treated tissue, leading to improved appearance and relief from any associated symptoms. Foam sclerotherapy is a safe and effective outpatient procedure that has helped many patients achieve healthier, more comfortable legs.

According to the number of veins that need to be treated, the surgery typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete on an outpatient basis. You may often continue your daily activities right away because there is little to no healing period right after the surgery.

A thorough explanation of the Sclerotherapy Procedure at Apollo Hospital, Karnataka

    Before the Procedure

An ultrasound scan will be performed to determine which veins need to be treated when a patient starts the procedure. After the initial consultation, the patient will receive a thorough explanation of all available treatment options, including any potential drawbacks and success rates. Patients are encouraged to ask any questions they may have during their initial consultation for foam sclerotherapy. It is important to fully understand the procedure and expected outcomes before signing any consent forms. This allows for informed decision-making and a more successful treatment experience.

    During the Procedure

Once the veins that require treatment have been located, a tiny needle is used to inject the foam solution into the vein(s). Medication is injected directly into the varicose vein, causing the vein lining to shrink and displace the blood. The veins are then disintegrated, contracted, and eventually absorbed by the organism. Similar to EVLA, after the operation, the blood is automatically redirected to healthy veins, improving circulation. Depending on the size of the treated veins, the surgery may be carried out with the use of ultrasound guidance.

It typically takes 30-45 minutes to complete the process. Although the tiny injections used in foam sclerotherapy are generally painless, some patients may experience some discomfort or mild pain symptoms. Some patients may experience a slight stinging sensation during sclerotherapy as the medication is injected into the vein.

    After the Procedure

When everything is finished, a nurse is available to help with the fitting of compression stockings (two if both legs have been treated). After treatment, this will be worn for seven days. After the completion of compression stocking therapy, the nurse will provide instructions on how to properly apply and wash the socks. Patients will also receive information on post-treatment care and potential side effects to monitor. Before leaving, patients are advised to take a 10-minute walk to help prevent blood clots and promote healing.

    Recovery after Foam Sclerotherapy

The healing process following sclerotherapy is quick. You can drive home after treatment to resume your regular activities. Your healthcare team will immediately put a pressure bandage on your leg following the injection. In order to keep the vein’s walls intact and stop blood from leaking back into the vein, this is done. Any pressure bandages must remain in place for 12 to 24 hours after your procedure. Additionally, you must put on compression stockings for three to four weeks. After receiving foam sclerotherapy, your leg can be uncomfortable for a few days. During your recovery, you should continue to be active by going for daily walks. For 4-6 weeks, try to stay away from prolonged standing, bending, squatting, and kneeling. If you plan to sit for any period of time, elevate your leg.

    Foam Sclerotherapy Follow-Up

You might need to visit the doctor again after your initial sclerotherapy treatment. According to how your leg feels and looks, you can typically decide if you need to go back. No need to schedule a follow-up session if you are pleased with the outcomes. You can schedule a follow-up reassessment, though, if you’d need confirmation or believe you might benefit from more therapy. In order to gain the most benefit from each treatment session, we urge you to wait at least 4 weeks between consultations.

    Risk and Complications

Sclerotherapy requires more time than varicose or spider vein surgery. There may be adverse effects as well. Sclerotherapy may cause the following side effects:

    • Larger injection sites may become lumpy or hard for a while.
    • Within a few days, the redness at the site of the needle should go away.
    • At the injection site, you may notice brown lines and bruises on your skin.
    • Allergic responses to the substance that was administered.
    • Sudden swelling in your leg.
    • Small ulcers developing at the injection site.
