Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women across the world. It accounts for 16% of cancers in women worldwide. 1 in 8 women risk being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lives. In India, Breast cancer ranks as the number one cancer among Indian females with rate as high as 25.8 per 100,000 women and mortality of 12.7 per 100,000 women, according to Indian Health Ministry.
India has a low survival rate for breast cancer, with only 66.1% survivors between 2010 and 2014 as compared to other nations like US & Australia with 90% survival rate.
Lack of awareness about the disease and its treatment is one of the major reasons for low survival rate of breast cancer patients in India. According to National Institute of Cancer Prevention And Research, breast cancer patients here visit doctors only when the symptoms begin to show; however in western countries breast cancer screening is normal routine in healthcare.
Let’s have a look at some of the points how we can spread awareness and beat this deadly disease during the Breast Awareness Month;
- Spread the Word
In the neighbourhood, at work place, schools, colleges, talk to people about breast cancer and urge people to spread the news further. In India, especially in the rural areas, people are still unaware about this disease. The Government Awareness Campaigns are also not much of help as women are too shy to view such ads and talk about this disease. Word of Mouth can be a great tool in spreading awareness in such a scenario. Local doctors should take initiative in promoting more about this disease and its symptoms.
- Use the Power of Social Media
We see a lot of such awareness messages and videos going viral during the month of October- Breast Cancer Awareness Month. However you can continue this activity throughout the year on your social media pages and channels.
Change your Display pictures to pink ribbon, use hashtags, share videos, updates on cancer from specialists and doctors, share survivor stories…do your best to spread awareness about this disease.
- Street Plays & Local Events
Street Plays is one form of communication that is deeply rooted in the Indian tradition. It has proved to be extremely beneficial to propagate social and political messages and to create awareness amongst the masses regarding critical issues. Target places with maximum footfalls like community centres, women help centres, etc. to convey your message through street plays and musical events.
- Organise a donation Event
Talk to the local authorities and seek their help in organising a donation event or a fundraising event and join them in the mission to help women and families get impacted by breast cancer. The amount raised in such events can be used to provide free mammograms and other screenings, free treatment, medical supplies and other palliative care to the needy.
- Facts & Figures
Spread information and awareness about Breast Cancer statistics. Shocking numbers can truly motivate people to take screening tests regularly.
- Promote Pink
A lot of people already know that pink color is associated with breast cancer. Raise awareness for breast cancer by adding a touch of pink to your wardrobe or simply wearing a pink ribbon. You can take pictures of you or with your friends, family, co-workers, team, etc. while wearing pink ribbons and share them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, tag your friends.
Every year we at Apollo CBCC celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year we have launched a unique campaign ‘Pink Relay’. We are inviting people to make a small donation of Rs 700 to sponsor for a free screening for underprivileged women and get complimentary screening for themselves in return.
