World Cancer Day 2023 Theme: Close the Care Gap

World Cancer Day is celebrated across the world on February 4th of every year. It is an annual day marked to spread awareness about the disease, share information related to its diagnosis, prevention, and cure, and raise money to help people suffering from the disease. The theme for World Cancer Day 2023 being “Uniting our voices and taking action,” we must in great unison educate people on how to fight against the dangerous disease, support cancer victims in their challenging battles, and help them emerge victorious. “Closing the Care Gap” is a multi-year campaign for 2022-24 mainly with the motive to have a lasting impact and invest more energy and time to bring a change. World Cancer Day carries great importance for the very fact that many people on this day celebrate their win against cancer. On the other hand, some people remember the dear ones that they have lost to cancer. Thus, the day demands the solidarity of all human beings. To fight against cancer, spread awareness, and help those who are in this life-threatening battle, Apollo Cancer Centre, a cancer hospital in Ahmedabad, puts heavy emphasis on the need for one to know the disease thoroughly. Achieving the Success of Inclusion in the India Book of Records, 2023 for ‘Removal of the heaviest Kidney tumor in a 3-year-old Paediatric patient and the largest Wilms’ tumor in the Paediatric age group’ through Surgery by Dr. Nitin Singhal (Sr. Consultant Surgical Oncology) & Team, Apollo Cancer Centre. The 3.1 kg tumor mass, which has been discovered to be the largest tumor was removed who happened to have a horseshoe kidney. The surgery was a difficult task but Dr. Singhal and his team nailed it and provided the child with a new lease of life. The child is having a normal life post-surgery like any other child of her age group.

Dr Ankit Jitani and Dr Ekta Jajodia from Ahmedabad, who had to reconcile to a small temple wedding during lockdown, were struck by covid-19, recovered and are back on duty helping other patients. They also describe their experience of donating plasma. Read on:  Ekta and I had been in a long-distance relationship for over two years. I was a Clinical Hematology post-doctoral trainee at NRS Medical College, Kolkata, while Ekta, now my wife, was pursuing a post-doctoral fellowship programme in Molecular Hematology at Christian Medical College, Vellore. We had been eagerly looking forward to moving to the same city, getting married and starting our lives together. By the end of 2019, things had started to fall in place- I took up a job as a consultant at the Apollo CBCC Hospital in Ahmedabad while Ekta took up a position at Unipath Speciality Lab as a Molecular Pathologist.
