January is designated to be the cervical cancer awareness month every year and voices out the need to understand and spread awareness about the disease, prevention and its cure. The theme for this year being, “Ending cervical cancer within a few generations” will firstly require educating people about the disease and its symptoms, so they reach out for immediate care and treatment. This will save them from larger trouble.
Cancer is a condition in which the cells of the human body grow out of controlautonomously. Cells are the tiny building blocks that make the body. Cells usually grow when your body needs them, and die when it doesn’t need them any longer but in a disease like cancer, the cells continue to multiply even though the body doesn’t need them. These abnormal cells grow rapidly and start taking the form of a lump or mass usually referred to as a tumor.
Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in any part of the human body. It can be caused by anything that tends to cause a normal body cell to develop and behave abnormally. Most of the time it is cancer causative agents. The causative agents could be chemically toxic compounds, ionizing radiations, pathogens, etc. Sometimes, cancer can also be caused because of genetic history.
Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the lower part of the uterus called the cervix – a part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is believed to be caused by various strains of human papillomaviruses (HPV), a group of viruses that cause sexually transmitted infections. When the human body is exposed to HPV, the body’s immune system typically prevents the infection from viruses

Head & neck cancer often starts on the surfaces that line the throat, mouth, and nose. It majorly occurs in the cells that make the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. Sometimes, it is commonly referred to as squamous cell carcinoma. Head & neck cancers can also begin in the salivary gland, muscles, sinuses, or nerves in the head and neck but these areas are less common when compared to the throat, mouth and nose.
Breast Cancer Awareness
Dr Anagha Zope Senior Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon
It’s important to be breast aware and check your breasts for changes on a regular basis. This will allow you to find any abnormalities in your breasts early. Your doctor should be consulted as soon as possible if you notice any unexpected changes in your breasts. Knowing your breasts and being aware of what changes are normal for you is what breast awareness is all about. You can get to know your breasts by looking at and checking them on a regular basis in whichever way suits you best. It is important to regularly examine both your breasts and armpits for any new changes. It’s important to feel all regions of your breasts, including your nipples and the area in and around your armpits.
The five-point code for breast cancer awareness:
- Know what is normal for you
- Know what changes to look and feel for
- Look and feel your breasts regularly
- Report any changes to your doctor immediately
- Attend breast screening from the age of 40

Not a winner, but a fighter The battle lines are clearly marked in the ECG lines. It’s either do or die. Combating cancer is no different from fighting a war. That day in Nov.’17 changed my entire world. My perception of life, relationship and people around me transformed forever. It was the day when I was diagnosed with Moderately Differentiated Adenocarcinoma of Sigmoid Colon – Stage 3. I went for a diagnosis at a local hospital in Uganda and started my treatment. Things were not working out well. So I flew to India and started taking treatment at some hospital there.I underwent surgery followed by 8 cycles of chemotherapy. Even this treatment didn’t work out. My whole world came crashing. I thought I would die. All the dreams of raising my kids well and aspirations of life were shattered. But my fight was on. Cancer isn’t another word for death, but synonym for hope. In Nov.’2018, things got worse and I developed the complaint of bleeding per rectum with continuous severe pain. My family was devastated. They felt helpless and watched me suffer the pain of cancer, which is the most unbearable, if yo
